Cobalt is an essential trace element that is part of vitamin B12. It is essential for the effectiveness of B12, as it allows B12 to function properly during the activation of enzymes that play a role in the metabolism of amino acids, as well as in the production of certain nerve cell proteins and essential neurotransmitters.
It also plays a role in the synthesis of thyroid hormones, where it is involved in the uptake of iodine, and a major role in the production of the hormone erythropoietin, which promotes red blood cell formation.
